Kannawidan: The Ylocos Festival

Residents of the province of Ilocos Sur have a simpler celebration of the annual Kannawidan Ylocos Festival this year.Kannawidan is a festivity which the City of Vigan celebrates every year. In this festival, the Ilocano people showcase cultural shows, native products and the talents of the Ilocanos. Kannawidan Ylocos Festival became an annual festival that aims to create awareness on the preservation of the province' rich cultural heritage, practices and traditions, and a showcase of the different agriculture and industry products of the province.

The provincial government, through its provincial tourism office, has announced strict guidelines to be observed during the festival to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Unlike previous years when the

Kannawidan Festival is being celebrated for at least a month, this year, it will only run for a week.
Held in the Heritage City of Vigan, the festival opened with the ribbon cutting of the Trade and Food Fair at the Kannawidan Grounds in Barangay Tamag where the one-town-one-product of the towns and cities of the province are displayed. It was followed by the Holy Mass concelebrated at Saint Paul Cathedral in this city led by government workers from national and local offices, public officials and members of non-government-organizations.The provincial government strictly mandates usage of face mask and SafePass to enter the Trade and Food Fair in Kannawidan grounds, Barangay Tamag.

Kannawidan Festival is very important to us Ilocanos. With this festival, we are preserving the culture, history and the old traditions of Ilocos Sur. We must be proud of being an Ilocano because even foreigners admire our culture and traditions.
